On your Bike!
Cycling is cheap, reliable, fast, keeps you feeling fit and healthy, and has huge environmental benefits. So, dust down your bike and beat the traffic for National Bike Week 2011!  This year, National Bike Week will take place from the 18-26th June and for the second successive year running, Kilkenny County Council in conjunction with Kilkenny Recreation and Sports Partnership (KRSP)  have secured some funding to run a number of initiatives and events around the county including the following:
 
Dr Bike Safe Cycling quizwill be held at La Sugradh, 2nd  July, 3.00p.m.. – 5-00p.m. at the Castle Park. Prizes on the day.
 
Dr Bike cycling quizwill be held at Youth Fest, Friday 1st July, 12.00p.m.– 4-00p.m.in Watershed.
 
“Safe Cycling” Workshops
Based on a very successful pilot programme from Bike Week 2010 – this programme will be delivered to selected national schools in Kilkenny City to promote safe cycling to 5th & 6th year pupils.   KRSP will co-ordinate and lead the programme in conjunction with the local Gardaí and will be delivered in the weeks running up to Bike week.
 
Beginners Cycling Sessions
Marble City Cyclers – local cycling club- are holding beginners cycling sessions every Monday night from the Castle Gates at 7pm.  See http://www.marblecitycyclers.com/
 
Bike Maintenance WorkshopsTwo Bike Maintenance Workshops will be held during Bike Week; one for beginners and one for more advanced and aspiring cyclists. Details of these events are to be finalised – phone KRSP for more information on 056-7720870 or see http://www.marblecitycyclers.com/
 
Time Trials
Marble City Cyclers will run a series of time trials for new and aspiring cyclists over the months of May/June. 
 
Pedal Power Workshops
KRSP in conjunction with Marble City Cyclers are looking to run two pedal power workshops targeting those new to cycling/recreational cyclists.  Details of these workshops are to be finalised – but to register your interest phone KRSP on 056-7720870. 
 
National Bike Week is part of the National Cycling Policy, which was launched in 2009. Under this policy, over 100 different actions will be taken over the coming years to promote a culture of safe cycling in Ireland by 2020. The National Cycling Policy aims to increase the number of bike users by 125,000 by 2020.
